on what to watch out for during the extreme heat.

Centers for Disease Control has a
Extreme Heat Prevention Guide, and
information about Heat Stress in the Elderly.

Electric fans may provide comfort, but when the temperature is in
the high 90s, fans will not prevent heat-related illness. Taking a
cool shower or bath or moving to an air-conditioned place is a much
better way to cool off. Air conditioning is the strongest protective
factor ag
ainst heat-related illness. Exposure to air conditioning for
even a few hours a day will reduce the risk for heat-related illness.
Consider visiting a shopping mall, public library, senior citizen
center or go to the movies for a few hours.

Many of the programs that help thousands of individuals have
already cut back on services and staff to try and maintain providing
help to those that are most in need.  Human service organizations
are once again in a fight for their survival in their efforts to provide
services to individuals throughout the commonwealth.
Please contact Governor Rendell and your state senator and representative and tell
them that you are in support of continued funding for human service programs.
Without funding for human services in the budget, not only will there layoffs but many
of the programs that people have counted on over the years will not be around to help out.
This link to the PA General Assembly, will give you contact information for your state
representatives and senators.  In the upper right hand corner is a box,
"Find Members by", entering your zip code will list your legislators, or by selecting
your county you can see which legislators cover your community.  Click on the
legislators name and you will have access to their contact information.

Please call and tell them that you support continued funding for human services in
Pennsylvania such as Help Line.  If you wish to assist Help Line in its efforts to
continue helping the citizens of Northeastern Pennsylvania you can donate here.

                                                                            Dial 2-1-1

2-1-1 is an easy-to-remember three-digit phone number that brings people and
services together.

The essence of 2-1-1 is in its simplicity:

  • 2-1-1 is for everyone and can be remembered by everyone.

  • 2-1-1 is free and confidential.

  • 2-1-1 makes the entire human services sector at every level of government
    work more efficiently.

  • 2-1-1 has proven itself time after time as an invaluable resource in the
    aftermath of a disaster.

  • 2-1-1 is the number to call to give help and to get help.

Pennsylvania is one of two states

that does not have a 2-1-1 system.

               Contact your local legislators

and ask them to support 2-1-1.

Additional information can be found at 2-1-1.

AT&T Wireless offers tips on how to make the best use of cell phones in case
of natural disasters or other catastrophes.

           - Program all emergency & family contact information into your phone.

-Have a communications plan.  Designate someone outside the area as a central contact
.
           - Keep batteries charged at all times, keep available extra batteries or a car charger
in cases of  extended power outages.
-Keep your phone dry and out of the elements.
-Forward your home number to your cell phone.  Forwarding is done from the telephone
companies central office, so your calls can be forwarded even if your landline is
                                         out of order.
-Use text messaging, which often will go through more quickly than a voice call.
-Keep non-emergency calls to a minimum and limit calls to the most important ones.
