Electric fans may provide comfort, but when the
temperature is in the
high 90s, fans will not prevent heat-related illness. Taking a cool
shower
or bath or moving to an air-conditioned place is a much better way to
cool off. Air conditioning is the strongest protective factor against
heat-related
illness. Exposure to air conditioning for even a few hours a
day will
reduce
the risk for heat-related illness. Consider visiting a shopping mall,

Wireless
Emergency
Notification
System
Luzerne County has
created this service to notify its citizens in the case of an
emergency. In the event of an emergency, a text message will be sent
to the mobile number AND/OR email provided outlining the nature of
the emergency. This is a free service provided by the County,
however normal text message fees may apply. Click on the icon
on the left to signup.

AT&T
Wireless offers tips on how to make the best use of
cell phones in case of natural disasters or other catastrophes.
- Program all emergency & family contact information into your phone.
-Have a communications plan.
Designate someone outside the area as a central contact.
- Keep batteries charged at all times, keep
available extra batteries or a car charger
in cases of extended power outages.
-Keep your phone dry and out of the elements.
-Forward your home number to your cell phone. Forwarding is done
from the telephone companies
central office, so your calls can be
forwarded even if your landline is out of order.
-Use text messaging, which often will go through more quickly than a
voice call.
-Keep non-emergency calls to a minimum and limit calls to the most
important ones.
